***Book Review*** War of the Cards (Queen of Hearts Saga #3) by Colleen Oakes

SUMMARY

The final book in the twisted YA trilogy re-imagining of the origin story of the Queen of Hearts.

Dinah has lost everyone she ever loved. Her brother was brutally murdered. The wicked man she believed was her father betrayed her. Her loyal subjects have been devastated by war. And the boy she gave her heart to broke it completely.

Now a dark queen has risen out of the ashes of her former life. Fury is blooming inside Dinah, poisoning her soul and twisting her mind. All she has left is Wonderland and her crown, and her obsession to fight for both. But the war rages on, and Dinah could inherit a bloodstained throne. Can a leader filled with love and rage ever be the ruler her kingdom needs? Or will her all-consuming wrath bring Wonderland to its knees?

This is not a story of happily ever after.

This is the story of the Queen of Hearts.

4/5 Stars

h. My. Gosh. I need to take a breath before I start writing this.

War of the Cards is the finale to Queen of Hearts Trilogy. All I really want to say about this book is that it deserves to be read. By the time I was done I had so many emotions swirling in me that I had to take a minute or few before I started functioning again.

As I started this book, I had a fair idea of how it would progress, but then midway through the story when I thought what could possibly happen now, the author threw in a twist that left me shocked. And things happened so quickly in a rush of overwhelmed emotions that my heart actually broke for Wardley. I don't know what I wanted for him but it definitely wasn't this, or maybe it was but under better circumstances. Dinah has grown and matured beautifully throughout the books and by the end, I really liked her character and the person she had become. I really REALLY liked what the author did somewhere at the end when Wardley says to Dinah about the traveller about her deed. *wink wink*

Villains got what they deserved and our MC's got their HEA. Kind of. You'll see what I mean if you read it.

All in all, this action packed trilogy with dark twists and impressive show of emotions is definitely worth a read.

***Book Review*** Blood of Wonderland (Queen of Hearts Saga #2) by Colleen Oakes

SUMMARY

The queen will rise.

Dinah has been exiled from Wonderland. The vicious father she always feared has framed her for the brutal murder of her brother and turned the kingdom against her.

Now hiding in the lush and mysterious Twisted Wood with only her war steed at her side, Dinah is faced with a choice. She could leave Wonderland forever or return and fight her father for her throne—a fight she knows would only result in bloodshed.

When a chance encounter with one of her father’s long-lost enemies brings Dinah more allies than she ever could have imagined, war starts to feel inevitable. But before Dinah can lead her people into combat, she must confront certain truths about her heart and her destiny—no matter how dark those truths may be.

Revolution is rising in Wonderland.

Dinah’s battle has begun.

“There was a freedom in having nothing to lose”

Blood of Wonderland is the sequel to Queen of Hearts and about Dinah's journey after she fled the Wonderland Palace in that grand escape with the steed as her only company. I thought the story would drag her days as she traveled alone surviving in the woods but the pace was good without getting boring. Some of my answered from the first book were answered and left me surprised in a good way. I had NOT seen that coming!

I was a bit disappointed about how Wardley's character reacted to Dinah but I guess that was the last push she needed to become who she did. We could see that he was really trying to love her the way she wanted but you just cant force what's not there.

I must say I really enjoyed reading about Dinah and seeing her transform from a spoilt princess to a mature queen who commanded your respect. I'm looking forward to reading the finale and seeing how the story ends.

***Book Review*** Queen of Hearts (Queen of Hearts Saga #1) by Colleen Oakes

SUMMARY

Only queens with hearts can bleed.

This is not the story of the Wonderland we know. Alice has not fallen down a rabbit hole. There is no all-knowing cat with a taunting smile. This is a Wonderland where beneath each smile lies a secret, each tart comes with a demand, and only prisoners tell the truth.

Dinah is the princess who will one day reign over Wonderland. She has not yet seen the dark depths of her kingdom; she longs only for her father’s approval and a future with the boy she loves. But when a betrayal breaks her heart and threatens her throne, she is launched into Wonderland’s dangerous political game. Dinah must stay one step ahead of her cunning enemies or she’ll lose not just the crown but her head.

Evil is brewing in Wonderland and maybe, most frighteningly, in Dinah herself.

This is not a story of happily ever after.

This is the story of the Queen of Hearts.

REVIEW

3/5 STARS

Woah, that was not what I had been expecting!

Queen of Hearts is not your average Alice in Wonderland story. There are twists and dark turns around every corner. Though it took me a few chapters to really get into the story but once it caught my interest, it was hard to put down.

I felt the MC could have been a little more mature considering her upbringing and future responsibilities and I was also left with unanswered questions but I'm hoping the sequel will take care of that.

I really appreciate the author taking this world and giving it such a unique retelling. I look forward to reading the sequel and finding out more about our MC's journey.

Laney’s ex-boyfriend Lachlan Hems is back in Florida, still Australian and sexy as hell. His best mate Lucas is getting married, and he is in town for the show. He just didn’t realize Laney would be there … in another guy’s arms, or that seeing her again would have such an effect on him. After the incident in high school, he vowed to never care for her again. But sometimes, fate has different plans.
When Laney’s resolve crumbles, Lachlan is the only one who can put her back together again.
Book 2 – HERE WITH ME by Alla Kar
Jaden Baker is stoked about college, making new friends, and erasing the memory of being bullied in high school. But moving on comes with a price. Her dad has made arrangements for her to move into her brother’s apartment so he can keep an eye on her. But there’s a glitch in her dad’s plans. There are also two other college boys living in the apartment too. Suddenly, living in an off-campus apartment with three college-aged boys seems like a bad idea — but not to Jaden. After all, Cade is pretty damn hot, making the whole forced living arrangement and brother-as-a-baby-sitter a little more tolerable.
Cade Jenkins grew up on the opposite side of the tracks from his best-friend and his privileged little sister. His dad bailed when he was a kid, and he can’t help but still care for his drug-addicted mother. This semester, things are looking up. He’s met someone. Too bad she’s his best-friend’s fresh out of high-school, inexperienced little sister. Awkward!
Just when it looks like things might be changing for the better, Jaden finds herself battling severe depression and a broken heart as old feelings re-emergence after that high school bully targets her again. Cade, who’d love to pick up the pieces and make her whole, must fight his own demons and brewing family trouble just to hold on.
If only they didn’t find themselves falling irrevocably in love.

With no more tears.
And love will not break your heart

Cold coffee.
Is there anything worse? Staring down into my owl coffee mug, the cool brown liquid gawks up at me in mock humor. The cord is lying on the counter beside the pot, not plugged into the wall where it was last night. Instead, Heather’s—my looks-obsessed roommate—straightener is plugged in. What’s the point of having a timed coffeepot if it’s unplugged every morning before you get a chance to use it? I grit my teeth and blow my bangs from my forehead.
I snatch the cord from the plug-in and toss the straightener on her bed. Hopefully, she’ll get the point. Instead of pouring the coffee down our sink, I sip on it. Hell shall freeze over before I go a morning without my coffee. Hell frozen-over would probably be hotter than my coffee right now. I grab my backpack, tie my blond hair into a messy bun, push up my thick, black-rim hipster glasses, and walk out of our dorm room.
I lock the door and head toward class, the aroma of perfumes swarming my nose. A few girls in towels race down the hall, screaming. Like clockwork, a tall muscular guy follows behind them, a huge I’m-going-to-get-some grin on his face. College is definitely a guy’s wet dream come true. Especially, in a co-ed dorm. He’ll have one of them pressed against their dorm room door tonight. They’re all so predictable.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s perfectly fine to date. But, doing it wisely is a completely different issue. Girls aren’t the smartest when it comes to dating. The three C’s that guys can’t stand are clinginess, crying, and clumsiness. I know it’s not possible to walk like a runway model twenty-four seven. And we all know girls tend to cry, especially around that time of the month. But it’s all about the game. You’ve got to play it right, so you can snag a great guy. It’s so easy to rope one in as long as you focus, and I don’t mean on his abs.
I’m almost clear of the hallway when I hear my name. I turn on my heel. Heather is frowning from the lounge doorway. Her long black hair is perfectly straightened. I hope she gets a medal for her hair today, because that would be the only reason I’d forgive her for unplugging my coffeepot.
She pouts her pink-coated lips and curls her finger for me to come closer. “She’s crying again.”
Damn it. I don’t have to ask. I know it’s Bethany and I know why she’s crying. It’s the same damn thing every week. Sighing, I walk into the lounge. A few girls surround her, patting her back and trying to calm her down. It’s not going to work, because she’ll be in the same position next week. She glances up over her long lashes and slender nose. Her strawberry blond hair is messy and hangs loosely down to her breasts. “I just—I just don’t know what I’m doing wrong. It’s like every time he sees me coming, he goes the opposite direction. What do I do—” she breaks off in a fit of sobs.
I’m thinking of a million different ways to escape when Heather claps her hands loudly. “I know. Laney—why don’t you help her? You helped me with Todd. You got him to ask me out in two days. You could help Bethany.”
Oh, the agony. I don’t know if I could stand two minutes in a room alone with her. I give her a small fake smile and shrug. She looks like the damn cat off of Shrek, with her wide eyes and trembling bottom lip. If I say no I’ll look like a major bitch. “Who is it this ti—?” I stop myself.
She wipes her nose and tries to straighten her hair. I want to tell her that’s not going to work, she needs a brush, but I keep my mouth shut.
“Aiden Sims.”
And the heavens opened up and released the hottest male specimen to come to Jacksonville University. Well, that’s what he thinks anyway. Aiden is the playboy of our small university and he plays his Abercrombie-model good looks to his advantage. I grumble under my breath and pull my strap up my shoulder to keep it from falling.
“Have you had sex with him?”
A few of the hovering girls gasp. Oh, get over it. Bethany shakes her head. “No, we haven’t.”
“Great. That means you still have a chance to get him.”
“Wait,” a redheaded girl says from the corner of the room. “You’re telling me that if we’ve had sex with a guy, and he hasn’t committed, we’re screwed?”
I nod. “Pretty much. You’ve never heard why buy the cow when the milk is free?”
The redhead scoffs. “How do you know so much about this stuff, and who made you queen?”
Rawr. Someone hasn’t had their panties down lately. Heather raises her index finger and rolls her neck; that’s how I know she’s going to tell someone off. “She knows exactly what to do when it comes to getting guys. I’ve been with Todd for five months.”
Red shakes her head. “But why don’t you have a boyfriend then, Laney?”
A long, hard pain starts to build in the depth of my stomach. My eyes feel funny and my heartbeat is heavy in my chest. I will not think about him. No, I refuse. “No one has interested me yet.” Which is almost true, no one at this college has been worth my time. But that’s not the real reason. Red grabs her coffee and sways out of the room. Please, bring me back that coffee!
A tall brunette sitting in the corner clears her throat and leans over the worn lobby chair. “What else. I mean—any other advice?”
Everyone turns to look at me. I should totally charge for this. I shrug. “You can’t show that you’re too interested. No waiting for his text. He needs to be waiting for yours.” I take a sip of my cold coffee. “Don’t throw yourselves at him. Don’t take fifty million pictures on the second date. Make him work for it.”
Most of the girls nod slowly at me, waiting for more advice. I glance at the wall clock. I’m going to be so late.
“Laney,” Bethany asks, drawing my attention back to her. “Can you help me? I don’t know what move to make. Please.”
Can I help you, or will I help you? It’s not like my small job at the writing center takes up that much time. Hell, I have tons of free time. That’s exactly why I have a TBR list on my Kindle a mile long. I tug at my ponytail, then give Heather a defeated look. “Okay, I can help. You want to meet me tonight? We’ll go over our strategy.”
Bethany smiles. I think it’s the first one I’ve seen on her face since she moved in last semester. “Well, I have plans to go out tonight. Aiden is going to be there, if you want to meet up?”
Oh, no. I don’t like where this is going. I’m not a big partier. I’m twenty-two and couldn’t care less about getting wasted. I do it sometimes, but only for celebration or if I’m really bored. “Where are you guys meeting?”
Bethany stands up, adjusting her boobs in her shirt. No wonder guys flock to her, and no wonder they leave. She leaves nothing to the imagination. “The Loft down on King Street.” She places her hands on her slender hips. “You coming? I really want to start now.”
The black lines of mascara running down her face makes me sad. She is really desperate. Crying in the third-floor lounge isn’t the fix-it problem she was looking for and I can’t blame her. All the girls surrounding her right now would advise her to do the absolute wrong thing.
I huff. It’s just one night. “Okay, I’ll meet you there at nine.”

EXCERPT:
Jesus Christ, was she trying to kill me? I’d been here for hours and as if the sight of Jackie in her cute sundress wasn’t enough, I’d had to spend the past hour watching her bounce around the pool while a group played volleyball. The chocolate brown bikini she was wearing clung to her firm figure and left little to the imagination. She’d pulled her dark hair up into a messy bun and the green in her eyes seemed even more prominent than usual because of the sun she’d gotten on her face earlier.
“Jamie, why don’t you join us?” Ben yelled across to me from the pool. “Patterson has to get back to the Mrs., and we need someone to sub in.”
I’d brought my suit since the invite referred to the event as a retirement/pool party. Getting a closer view of Jackie in that flimsy scrap of fabric she called a swimsuit wouldn’t hurt either.
“Give me a minute, and I’ll go change,” I shouted back.
Jackie’s lips formed a thin line, as if she didn’t approve of my joining their little game, which only made it that much sweeter for me. The sexual tension that had been thrumming between us had me wanting to get under her skin. I figured if I couldn’t touch it, I could get under it at the very least.
But by the time I made my way over to the pool, the game had changed and the guys were now playing with the women hoisted up on their shoulders. I felt a grin forming on my face. This ought to be fun. My gut tightened when I saw Jackie’s tanned legs wrapped around the shoulders of the guy she’d left me to go speak to earlier. They certainly seemed cozy with one another. What was the deal with those two?
I mentally shook it off. I had no claim to her. Jackie could do what she wanted. As could I.
I politely pushed my way through the crowd on the patio area and caught Jackie’s eye a moment before I reached the pool. I grinned with satisfaction when I noticed her gaze dart down the expanse of my chest and back up. When she caught me looking at her perusal of my assets, her eyes flared for a second and then morphed into an expression that reminded me of a child who’d been caught doing something wrong.
I chuckled and dove into the pool. “Okay, what are we playing?” I asked once I surfaced.
“Jamie, you get Sylvia on your shoulders,” Ben said.
I glanced over at the blond waiting in the corner of the pool. She gave me a coy smile. I didn’t know who Sylvia was, but I smiled warmly and introduced myself.
“I’m Jamie. Good to meet you.” I held my hand out for her.
She giggled for a second, then shook it. “Sylvia, pleasure. I’m glad you decided to join us.”
Someone made a disgusted sound behind me. “Are you guys going to ogle each other all afternoon or are we going to play?” It was Jackie, and she sounded irritated. If I didn’t know better, I would’ve guessed jealous.
I turned to face her, almost laughing. She looked pouty with her hands crossed over her chest and a scowl on her face.
“Hold up there, princess. Give us a minute.” I grinned, knowing my comment would antagonize her further.
She made another sound of frustration and uncrossed her arms.
“You ready to kick their ass?” I asked Sylvia.
“Definitely!” She flipped her platinum hair behind her shoulder and smiled.
I swam down under the water where Sylvia had widened her stance and put my head between her legs, rising up out of the water so that her thighs rested on my shoulders. When I came up out of the water, I saw Jackie bending down as best she could and whispering into her partner’s ear. The guy whose shoulders she was on patted her leg and nodded. My jaw clenched at the sight of his hand on her thigh.
“Alright. Three points until match. You all set?” the guy who was acting as referee shouted.
Everyone on both sides nodded, and I spread apart from my other teammates to cover the most ground. As I watched the muscles in Jackie’s thighs clench around the other guy’s neck, I vowed that I, too, would have my head between Jackie’s legs before the night was over.

Review : Until You (Fall Away #1.5) by Penelope Douglas

Summary :

***This novel contains graphic sexual content and harsh language. It is only appropriate for adult readers age 18+.

Have you ever been so angry that hitting things felt good? Or so numb that you actually felt high? The past few years have been like that for me. Traveling between fury and indifference with no stops in between.

Some people hate me for it, while others are scared of me. But none of them can hurt me, because I don't care about anything or anyone.

Except Tatum.

I love her so much that I hate her. We used to be friends, but I found out that I couldn't trust her or anyone else.

So I hurt her. I pushed her away.

But I still need her. The sight of her centers me, and I can pool all of my anger into her. Engaging her, challenging her, bullying her...they are my food, my air, and the last part of me that feels anything human.

But she left. She went to France for a year, and came back a different girl.

Now, when I push, she pushes back.

Review :

“Girlfriend isn’t enough to describe you, Tate. That term is disposable. You’re not my girlfriend, my girl, or my woman. You’re. Just. Mine,” I bit out every syllable, so she would fucking understand. “And I’m yours,” I added, a little calmer.”

The retelling of a story from the guys point of view is becoming very popular these days. The results can be hit or miss. This one, for me, was a HUGE hit.

I was totally wrapped up in Tate and Jared's story in Bully. I can't say I ever forgave him for his behavior, but I decided if Tate could, then I just has to let it go.

I wasn't sure how I was going to feel, living in his head. It was a darker place then I even imagined. I still don't forgive him totally for his actions, but I DO believe he loves Tate completely.

I truly loved this book from beginning to end. Despite the fact that I already knew the outcome, most of it felt fresh and new. I felt like an essential part of the story was finally being told. It was, in my opinion, the best "retelling from his POV " book I've read so far.

Huge props to the author for another great book.

Review :Crush (Crash #3) by Nicole Williams

Summary :

Football glory. A giant diamond. A wandering eye.

Jude and Lucy are happily engaged . . . but that doesn't mean life's a bed of roses.

Once again, Jude and Lucy are torn apart by football training and a summer job that creates new tensions. This time Jude's the one with trust issues. Will Lucy's life-changing news bring them back together or end their relationship for good? Can love triumph forever?

Review :

" I'll always come back, Luce. No matter how many rip-roaring fights we have and no matter how many miscommunications we have. I'll always come back because you're where I belong."

It's decided. Jude & Lucy have a special place in my heart forever! <3

I loved, let me repeat LOVED this book! The main thing that I loved about this book was that Jude and Lucy dealt with all of their problems, and they were so much determined and determined to keep their relationship strong.

There were all kinds of emotions, all sorts of misunderstanding, but at the end of the day there was this bright light of happiness.

Jude has improved a lot. Like way lot. I don't even know if that makes sense. I remember him in Crash. He was so violent, anger, and immature. And now in Crush, he is this sweet, responsible man, who accepted his life with his new wife and his daughter. Lucy, was a rollercoaster of emotions. And that was so very normal. She had been through a lot, and she just proved herself to be more strong. And I'm proud of both of them.

Their love was so pure, so unconditional and unadulterated that just when I thought they couldn't make me any more happy, they did. As I mentioned in the beginning, their story will be my favorite always!

Alexa, on the other hand, longs for Ethan, the boy next door. Four years older than her, and with an ever-changing roster of girlfriends, Ethan is everything Devin isn’t: wild, sensual, and unpredictable.

In the aftermath of the deadly earthquake, Ethan makes his move on Alexa, who reciprocates in a confused whirl of grief and desire. When Ethan leaves town the next day, Devin comes back into Alexa’s life, offering support and expecting nothing in return.

Alexa begins to see the advantages of Devin’s quiet, stable love. Can she get past the friendship hang-up while trying to forget bad boy Ethan? It’s a choice that will change her life forever.

REVIEW :

One thing that I liked best about this book is the writing. It was so simple and straightforward that I couldn’t stop reading, right until the last page.
Alexa Crushed, is the story of a girl who is cherished and loved to the core by her parents, who treated her like the princess that she was to them. Tragedy strikes, leaving Alexa lonely as ever and confused as hell.  The grief that Alexa is suppose to feel could have been explained a bit more in detail so that the reader could actually empathize. I just couldn’t connect with Alexa’s feelings. Her devastation could have been portrayed better. Another thing that bothered me was her behavior just after the tragedy. I mean just because your sad and grieving doesn’t mean you have to go and sleep with someone. Alexa should have given a little time for that to happen and owned up to her loss. But it is also understandable that some people do use sex as a coping mechanism. So I was able to surpass that.
Seeing that I’m not really a fan of love triangles, Alexa’s feelings for both the guys didn’t settle well with me. Ethan & Devin were both equally hot and hero material. Ethan is your sexy bad boy next door who you dream about secretly in the dead of night. Devin on the other hand is your sweet and gentle childhood BFF who also makes your heart race. Always rooting for the bad boy  personally, I totally dig Ethan. But than he had to go ahead and be a jerk. I did have a feeling there was was more to him than was being portrayed. Way more. Which was confirmed at the end of the book.
About the story, I feel it had a potential to be much better. It leaves us at a cliffhanger, but still the overall story felt incomplete. Like something was missing. What did spike an interest, was the mystery that Alexa found in the letters. That alone is going to make me want to read the sequel. I had guessed where this story might be going but the mystery that popped up, has kept me guessing.
Overall, I’d say for a debut novel, T without a doubt did an awesome job! Count me in for the next one.

Review : Vampire Academy By Richelle Mead

Summary :

ONLY A TRUE BEST FRIEND CAN PROTECT YOU FROM YOUR IMMORTAL ENEMIES…

Lissa Dragomir is a Moroi princess: a mortal vampire with a rare gift for harnessing the earth's magic. She must be protected at all times from Strigoi; the fiercest vampires—the ones who never die. The powerful blend of human and vampire blood that flows through Rose Hathaway, Lissa's best friend, makes her a dhampir. Rose is dedicated to a dangerous life of protecting Lissa from the Strigoi, who are hell-bent on making Lissa one of them.

After two years of freedom, Rose and Lissa are caught and dragged back to St. Vladimir's Academy, a school for vampire royalty and their guardians-to-be, hidden in the deep forests of Montana. But inside the iron gates, life is even more fraught with danger…and the Strigoi are always close by.

Rose and Lissa must navigate their dangerous world, confront the temptations of forbidden love, and never once let their guard down, lest the evil undead make Lissa one of them forever…

Review :

Dimitri is honestly my favourite male book character. He's the most beautiful creature! He's a badass god and always has this facade of control that Rose can always see through. Their relationship goes farther than a relationship because they both know what their mission in life is; "to protect them."

Rose, being the tough, no bullshit, type of girl she is, knows that too and it starts to sink in when this motto starts to directly effect her life majorly. Her goal in life has always been to protect her best friend Lissa and you know there's trouble when she starts to question that.

This book has been driving me crazy, people actually started to question my sanity everytime I put the book down.Yes, I'm love with a fictional character in a book; Dimitri (just in case you didn't feel the awesomeness pouring off of his name)

Review :When I'm Gone (Rosemary Beach #11) by Abbi Glines

Summary :

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Abbi Glines comes the next new adult novel in the Rosemary Beach series, in which we meet Mase, a Texas heartthrob first introduced in Take a Chance who comes to Rosemary Beach to stir things up.

I had an urge to fix all her problems. Which was stupid. She was doing fine without me. But something about those big eyes…

Mase Colt-Manning has always preferred his humble life as a Texas rancher to his birthright as the son of a legendary rock star. In fact, he rarely visits his father’s rarefied world in Rosemary Beach, especially if it means bunking at his vile half-sister Nan’s house—until one visit leads to a chance encounter with a young, gorgeous house maid who awakens him with her off-key but spirited imitation of a country music star…

Reese Ellis finally has her freedom. After escaping a lifetime of abuse from her parents and classmates for an undiagnosed learning disorder, she seizes the opportunity to be a house maid to some of the richest families in Rosemary Beach. But her job is in jeopardy when she causes an accident at the home of her most important client, Nan Dillon. When a hot, half-naked stranger with a cowboy’s swagger comes to her rescue, she’s intrigued—then afraid once he shows his own interest. Reese has never met a trustworthy man in her life. Will Mase be any different?

Review:

I absolutely adore Abbi Glines's writing.

I just cannot stop reading the book!
And the way that she portrayes the guys, phew, they make me swoon EVERY SINGLE TIME!
Be it Rush Finlay or Grant Carter, Mase Manning was no exception in leaving a girl breathless.

When I'm Gone, though somewhat along the similar lines of the previous books, still remains a page turner.  Reese Ellis, is a sweet and shy girl who you can't help but want to hug and keep safe from this weird and cruel world. I would have probably liked the book even more, if only it was a bit more longer. Don't blame me, I always want good books to last longer, or... you know, not last at all.
The end was absolutely unexpected. Way to go Abbi...leave us with a cliffhanger....again. Grant and Harlow's cliffhanger almost killed me. And the way of the emotions written made tears prick my eyes.
I love the book that leaves me this way. And I honestly cannot wait for Nan's story. Just saying.
Overall I would give this book 3 hot stars because you just cannot give Mase Manning anything less than HOT!

Excerpt:

Chapter 1

Jax—Present

The engraved invitation I held was heavy in both my hand and my heart, but it confirmed I had the right address. I examined the church before me with a sigh. It all came down to this. Cars parked and people streamed inside. I hung back, leaning against a tree. Id hoped I would catch a glimpse of her, but she must have gone inside before I got here. Everyone was dressed in their nicest clothing and chatted amongst themselves, enjoying the day that was sure to be filled with happiness and love. Only my heart was being slowly ripped out of my chest. People stopped filtering into the church—there was no time like the present. I slipped inside; maybe no one would notice me. Excitement filled the interior, creating an almost audible hum. I went down a hallway to see if I could locate her. When I spotted women dressed in dark purple dresses, my heart sank.

I had found her.

As the ladies talked and giggled, I pressed myself against the wall, praying they would be too caught up in their excitement to notice me. They walked right by me as though I were a decoration. When they were out of sight, I continued down the hall until I saw the sign on the door. Brides Room. Id known what to expect, but it didnt help. I was devastated all over again. This should have been our day. She should be getting ready to walk down the aisle to marry me. Not whomever had been holding her in his arms instead. If only I hadnt been such a disaster, it could have been me. I rapped on the door and looked up and down the hall to see if anyone would come and interrupt me. Come in, she called from the other side of the door.

My breath caught in my throat. It had been five years since I heard her voice. I closed my eyes and gave the knob a slow turn, opening the door just enough for me to slip inside. My heart stopped and my lungs failed when my eyes fell on her. She was facing away from me, watching through a full length mirror. When she saw me, her eyes widened and she gasped. She wore a tiara on her head that caught the sunlight from the open window and a veil that fell down her back. Her long, red hair hung in curls. Her dress hugged her body in an amazing way and it was hard to look away. She was still as gorgeous as the day I last saw her. Her blue eyes still captivated me. It was like no time had passed and she was the same girl who stole my breath from the moment I first laid eyes on her in the diner. If only I was strong enough back then to hold on to her.

Jax, she said, and turned to face me. Her hands flitted down her dress, smoothing the fabric. What are you doing here?
I came for you, I said, stepping closer to her. Her eyes filled with tears and she shook her head.

You cant be here. Not today.

Cassandra. She winced when I said her full name. It felt wrong, too intimate to call her Cassandra after so many years apart. Cassie, you cant marry him.

Youve been gone for years, Jax. Years. Ive moved on. She tried to sound convincing, but her voice wavered. That little bit of hesitance gave me the courage to tell her what I came to say. Please, please dont do this.

I moved in closer until I could touch her. Running a finger down her arm, feeling her skin, the same electricity that was always between us sparked, and goose bumps popped up on her flesh. She closed her eyes as though she were in pain, yet her body swayed toward me. I took her face between my palms, running my thumbs over the soft skin of her cheeks until she looked up at me. Her eyes were full of regret and tears.

Im getting married today, Jax. You cant be here. She said the words, but her body pressed closer to mine until only a breath separated our lips. Her eyes seemed to plead for me to take her away and also to leave. She was torn, wanting me and pushing me away at the same time.

You dont have to get married. You could leave with me right now.

I cant. My family is here and his family is here and I cant just leave. What about Ben?

Of course her first thought would be about her son. We can leave through the back and Ill call my sister. Ry wont mind grabbing him and meeting us wherever we go. She closed her eyes again and tears leaked down her cheeks. I brushed them away with my thumbs. When she opened them, I could see the pain and uncertainty circling there. My eyes dropped to her lips and she parted them, pulling her full lower lip between her teeth. I met her gaze, where desire swirled with the uncertainty and pain. That was all I needed. I closed the distance between our lips, and her eyes slid shut. A small sigh escaped her. I pressed my lips gently against hers, reveling in the warmth and the perfection of her mouth. She deepened the kiss, her tongue stroking against my lips until I opened them. Her hands slipped into my hair, holding on tightly, as though I would disappear. I held her face between my hands, not wanting to let her go, afraid of what would happen when this moment ended. She moaned and pressed closer to me until her body was melded to mine. One of her hands dropped down and grabbed the waist of my jeans, pulling me to her. Her body still felt familiar as I slid one of my hands down her torso and gripped her waist. Our lips moved in a frenzy as we clambered to get closer to one another. The need for her was almost painful. It had been five years since I held her this way and tasted her. I wanted more. I wanted to devour her and make it so she wouldnt want to leave. I knew, somewhere in my heart and mind, that once our lips separated, the moment would be over. As her hands tore at my shirt, trying to get underneath it, someone knocked on the door.

Cassie? a woman called through the door. She pulled away from me and I felt the loss of her immediately. I wanted to pull her into my arms and convince her not to let this be the end. It couldnt end this way. Yeah? Cassie answered, attempting to catch her breath. She took a few hesitant steps away from me, but her hands were still clenching my shirt, holding me. Its time. Are you ready? Yeah. Just— she sighed, closing her eyes. Just give me a minute, okay? Sure. Ill wait for you down the hall. Ill be there in a minute. Cassies eyes were full of resignation. They locked on mine. Cassie, you dont have to do this. I cant leave Nolan, Jax. I care about him.

She let go of my shirt and took a few steps away from me, then turned back to the mirror. She ran a finger under her eyes and around her lips, fixing her slightly smudged lipstick. When she was done she turned back to me and her eyes were no longer churning with emotion. She was surrounded by impenetrable walls. You have to leave, Jax. Pain twisted my heart and my stomach dropped. Please, Cassie. Just give me a chance. You had your chance. You had years to come back and now its too late. I moved closer to her as pain made it hard to breathe. She held her hand up, stopping me. Im done, Jax. Im getting married. You need to leave. I love you, I pleaded. I had to stop her from walking out the door and out on me. I felt her slipping through my fingers again, but this time I would fight for her. She gasped and her eyes widened briefly before she caught herself and her walls rose again. If you wont leave, I will. She walked to the door, her dress rustling with her movements. Before she opened the door, she bowed her head, her back still to me, and she rested her hand on the doorknob. Goodbye, Jax.

She opened the door and stepped out, leaving me behind. I stood in the middle of the room, still feeling her skin under my fingers and her lips against mine. I replayed her voice over in my head, aching to have her come back, but I knew I had lost. I had lost my reason. Time lost meaning as I stood there, staring at the door and feeling the loss of her. Somehow, I found my way out of the room and then the church. Once I was in my truck, sadness overwhelmed me and I rested my head against the steering wheel. For the first time in years, I craved the oblivion alcohol gave me. Something, anything, to make this pain more bearable. But I had fought too hard for my sobriety to ruin it.

Without hope, though, I wasnt sure what the point was. I put the car in gear and drove slowly away, but I was leaving a huge part of myself back in the church.
