Two strangers.
Two broken hearts.
One night to set each other free.
Almost dying from an undiagnosed heart condition means every second of your life is a precious gift to be guarded.
Lena Pettitt was born a miracle.
And her parents never let her forget it.
Even if that daily reminder kept her from experiencing the one thing they were trying to protect most--her life.
Gabriel Martinez’s heart has been ripped out.
His pride has been stomped on.
Oh, and he now has an arrest record that’s caused an even bigger rift between him and his DA mother. All for a love that wasn’t really true.
Now he’s exiled to his grandmother’s, working on his late grandpa’s old Corvair when a shivering girl knocks on the garage door. Lena, left alone for the first time ever, has locked herself out of her house--in the snow. Gabe knows he could help this girl get back inside her house--but that may mean missing the next train to Boston to pick up the part he’s spent eight weeks tracking down. She can wait for him at his grandmother’s or…
A few hours, an aluminum valve cover, and some strong coffee later, neither Gabe or Lena can feign disappointment when they race to the station and arrive just as the last train home from Boston is pulling out.
As jaded as he is, Gabe can’t deny the fact that he’s excited to spend the night exploring a city he knows nearly every corner of, with a girl who sees magic in the simplest things.
Lena has been waiting for her tiny world to crack open her entire life. Now that it’s finally happened, she finds the only thing she can focus on is the unexpected tour guide who opens her eyes to possibilities she never imagined.
All they have is this one night, together, under the bright moon in a city full of hidden beauty.
It’s one night that will change how they see the world and the paths their hearts will take forever.
EXCERPT
“So what happened?” Lena asks. She takes another sip of her drink, then rests her hand on the the laminate countertop near mine. I want to focus on that. How close she is. How close she’s allowing me to be to her for the first time tonight. What I don’t want to be doing is talking about my ex-girlfriend. "Why aren’t you together anymore?"
Making love to her was like sleeping with a starfish.
She loved the thrill of a political protest more than she actually loved me.
She was happy to see me hauled off to jail for her cause, because it added a little drama to her life.
“I don’t know, I guess you can only make exceptions for people for so long before they all just sound like excuses.”
“You, or her?”
I suck in a quick breath before answering,“Maybe both?”
She stares down at her wrist, spinning the blue beads on her bracelet as she says, “But you loved her.”
It isn’t a question.
I nod slowly. “I did.”
“And now--”
“Now, I’ve moved on.” I shrug.
“Have you really?” Lena asks. “Because when she hugged you--”
I don’t really understand why we have to talk about this. So we ran into Jemma, it doesn’t mean the entire relationship needs to be rehashed over pie. Doing that will only lead to me having to discuss my arrest, and that’s not something I want to talk about with the girl who looks at me with those big brown eyes that scream trust and understanding and all the things I don’t even come close to deserving from someone.
I turn my barstool toward her, brushing her knee with my own. The simple touch is more electric and intimate than sex with my starfish ex.
“Look, Lena,” I say, as I wrap a straw wrapper around my index finger. “This isn’t something I want to get into.”
“You’ve asked me a bunch of questions tonight,” she presses.
That’s fair. I’ve spent the last several hours trying to drag every bit of information I can out of this crazy mysterious, beautiful girl.
Our server comes by the table to refill our drinks. “Can I just get the check?” I ask, hopeful she'll just let it drop after a change of venue.
“I’m not finished,” Lena says, motioning to her half-eaten piece of pie.
“I’m ready to go,” I say.
“Oh, because I asked you a question you don’t want to answer now?” she demands.
“No, Lena. I’m just ready to go.”
“Liar,” she mumbles under her breath. It’d be cute if it weren't so damn accurate.
I pull out my wallet as soon as our check arrives and hand over my debit card.
“I’m not a liar," I say, it comes out more harsh than I intend. "It’s just--being in love doesn’t define you. No matter what romantic idea you have in your head, love doesn’t go to the most deserving. It's not something you collect, like, the more the better. Love isn't a trinket passed down. It’s a wound left behind. Love changes you, but not always in a good way. It’s a goddamn scar.”

~Book Details~
Title and Author: Under My Skin by Alix Nichols
No. of Pages: 130 Pages
Series: Bistro La Boheme #2
Publication Date: October 11, 2014
Genre: Contemporary Romance
~Blurb~
UNDER MY SKIN is the second novel in the addictive BISTRO LA BOHEME series. This delightful Parisian version of "Four Weddings and a Funeral" will entertain you with a gripping story, endearing characters and sizzling romance.
A tall well-dressed guy entered the bistro, dripping rain and hotness. He stopped by the door and surveyed the room searching for someone, his gaze lingering on the females...until it met Jeanne's. He beamed and walked toward her, his eyes trained on her and full of warmth. Did he know her? Was she supposed to know him?
Feisty bartender Jeanne and geek-turned-hottie Mat embark on an emotional and sensual roller coaster, as their paths cross at an engagement party, a baptism and a wedding... not counting all the other times they "accidentally" run into each other.
And miserably fail to behave with propriety.
But Mat is an ambitious politician running for mayor of his hometown and going steady with an exquisite woman. He knows exactly where he wants to be five years from now.
Falling for Jeanne all over again is definitely NOT part of his plan.
~Excerpt~
A tall well-dressed guy entered the bistro, dripping rain and hotness. He stopped by the door and surveyed the room. Must be looking for Rob, Jeanne thought. She tried to peel her gaze off him and focus on the conversation around her. Easier said than done. Aside from his general attractiveness, the stranger was full of contrasts that mesmerized her.
He had long legs and narrow hips, yet his upper body was deliciously brawny. The poor fellow must have a hard time finding suits that fit. Speaking of suits, his was a sleek number cut from the finest, smoothest wool to grace La Bohme on her watch. The trendy jacket overlaid the lines of his V-shaped torso as if it were tailor-made. Which it probably was. On top of all that, his friendly clean-shaven face sported a masculine nose and a firm jawline.
Just as the mysterious hunk turned to survey her side of the room, Rob approached him and gave him a big hug. "I'm so glad you made it! It wouldn't have been a proper engagement party without my future best man."
"It's a matter of having one's priorities straight," the hunk said. "I told the boss I was leaving at five thirty, whether we were finished or not."

"It's a matter of having one's priorities straight," the hunk said. "I told the boss I was leaving at five thirty, whether we were finished or not."
His crooked smile sent a couple of Jeanne's internal organs into a happy little somersault.
"That's the spirit, man." Rob grinned.
"That's the spirit, man." Rob grinned.
The guy winked. "Having Mom as my boss does have its perks. Where's Lena, by the way?"
"Fetching her folks. They should be here in half an hour." Rob patted him on the shoulder. "Now, why don't you give me your wet jacket and go get yourself a drink. The party doesn't officially begin until eight thirty, so you can chill and talk to the people you know."
The hunk removed his jacket, uncovering an expensive-looking shirt--and a better view of his broad chest.
Jeanne swallowed. Was this guy real?
Rob took the wet garment from him and walked away. And then something weird happened. The hottie remained by the door instead of walking toward the guests or the bar. He looked around the room again as if searching for someone--his gaze lingering on the females until it met Jeanne's. He beamed and walked toward her, his eyes trained on her and full of warmth.

Does he know me? Do I know him?
It was downright impossible that she would forget a stud of this caliber, even if she had met him during her wild teens.
"Hi, Jeanne. Don't you remember me?" he asked when he was close enough for her to discern the hint of five-o'clock shadow on his chiseled jaw.
"I'm sorry . . . Are you sure we've met?"
"Every day for almost two years."
Righto. "Next you'll tell me I used to go out with you," she said tilting her head to the side.
"Unfortunately, you didn't." The dreamboat sounded genuinely sorry. "But it wasn't for my lack of trying. I spent most of my money eating at this bistro just so I could see you."

"OK, you really don't remember me." He bowed ceremoniously. "Mathieu Grard, also known as Mat. I'm a friend of Rob's. We studied together here in Paris a few years back."
"Mat?" There was no way this guy was Mat. "You can't be him. Mat was . . . he was . . ."
"Nothing like me?" he prompted, the corners of his mouth twitching.
To put it mildly.

~About the
Author~
I am an avid reader of chick lit, romance and
fantasy, caffeine addict and a badge-wearing Mr. Darcy/Colin Firth fan.
I released my first book at the age of six. It had six postcard-size pages stitched together and bound in velvet paper. The book was titled "Eliza and Robert" and had atrocious mistakes in every single word. Some words were written in mirror image. Unintentionally. I remember being immensely proud of my creation.
Turns out there's a remarkable constancy to my life: decades later, I still love the name Robert and the genre romance. As for my spelling and grammar, they are only marginally better than at age six (thank God for editors!).
I live and work in Paris, France. When not writing, I read romance (what else?) and spend time with my family.

Love is what remains after our reservations melt away; when we let our demons come out to play.
Selene knows it is just a matter of time before all hell breaks loose. Whoever is after them is after blood. Her blood. She should have cut ties with Remington the second she read that first letter, but that is no longer a choice. She has fallen too far, too hard, and she is in too deep, both emotionally and physically.
At times secrets unite, and sometimes they destroy lives. Will the secret that binds them be enough to break Selene and Remington, or will it mend shattered bonds and make them stronger?

HAVOC Excerpt
The past few months had been a blur of tireless workouts, to get back in shape to get back into modeling. If there was a city that’d make me forget the shit plaguing my life, Paris was it. I was here for work and pleasure, and I intended to take the pleasure part very seriously. The only thing clouding my bliss was right there in front of me—the receptionist currently tapping the polished counter of the Hotel L’Arc with his fingers.
I dropped my head in my hands, tired. I'd been waiting for Andrew—my contact with Sara Arden Modeling agency here in Paris—to call me back after having left several voice messages on his phone.
A soft, deep baritone on my right pulled me out of my thoughts. I lifted my head and turned around, momentarily forgetting that I didn't have a room for the night as my gaze locked with the tall guy standing beside me, dressed in a black pea coat and jeans. Pain and something like devastation flashed in his eyes, before he quickly schooled his expression.
He was tall, with dark, slightly wavy hair that curled at the nape of his neck, high cheekbones, and a chiseled jaw covered in a light scruff. Dark eyebrows with equally long, spiky lashes fringed his emerald-green eyes, which were now fixed intensely on me, his expression unreadable. And finally, his lips—full but not overly so and wide with a touch of rosy pink that gave them a healthy look.
And he was still staring at me, his brow furrowed as though he were trying to figure out something. Or was it confusion?
My gaze moved away from his as I narrowed my eyes, taking in how his navy-blue blazer framed his broad shoulders and his blue jeans hugged his muscular thighs.
God, he was beautiful. And very scary. Why the hell was he staring at me like that?
Being a size-twelve model, I was used to people staring at me appreciatively. Or sometimes in veiled disgust. I saw none of that on this man's face. Admittedly, not everyone was into full-bodied girls like me. Not knowing what was going on behind those green eyes was as disturbing as the weird pull I felt toward him. I've always heard people say how they meet someone, and right there the earth shifts around them or some gravitational shit. This wasn't that kind of pull, but a primal awareness of two souls.

“Looks like
she's back,” Vince said as we pulled back up to the shop the next
afternoon. He pointed at the two trucks
parked along the street. She waved at us
from the bed of one of the trucks as she she handed down boxes to someone. Her hair was pulled up into a ponytail that
barely brushed her shoulders as she turned her head to talk to whoever was
helping her move in. Why did she have to
be so damn cute? Couldn't have been a
dude or some homely girl that moved in next me, could it? That would have been asking the universe to
cut me a fucking break and that had never been the case before. Why would it start now?
“Looks like
she is,” I breathed. A part of me was
kind of hoping that she wouldn't come back. Another part, the one that hoped
she did, was taking notes on how great she looked as we approached. She smiled that excited, nervous grin that
she had when Vince told her she could have the apartment. She had a certain
look about her that reminded me of Audrey.
The Audrey from before we hit it big.
The one that just wanted to grab life by the horns. The one that didn't let the pressure get to
her. Like the old Audrey, she hadn't yet
been tainted. She was naïve and
unassuming, at least from where I was standing.
“Need some
help?” Vince offered up about the time I saw her helper step out from behind
the truck. He was around the same height
as me, which is where our similarities ended.
This guy had muscles in places I didn't even know were possible, and I
was an athlete. On top of those muscles
he had tattoos and a look on his face that said “back the fuck off.” Or he did when he was looking at me anyway. Judging from his appearance, I guessed I
wouldn't have to worry about him recognizing me. He didn't look like an avid golf fan. No, this guy was country, not country
club. All the more reason for me to keep
my distance from her. The last thing I
wanted to deal with was an overprotective boyfriend.
When he turned his attention to
Vince his demeanor seemed to change.
“I think we've
only got it, but thank you,” he said politely.
“I do have one favor to ask though,” he added, looking up at my new
neighbor who appeared to be concerned with the next words that were going to
come out of his mouth.
“Sure,” Vince
answered, resting his arms on the back of the truck.
“Keep an eye
on my girl here,” he nodded up at her.
“She tends leap before she looks, if you know what I mean.”
“I do not,”
she spouted. “I'll be just fine. I'm a big girl.” The way she popped her hand up on her hip and
practically stomped her foot caused everyone of us to crack a smile. She hopped down out of the back of the truck
and shut the tailgate. “Thanks for your
offer, Vince, but this is the last load to go upstairs. Come on, Cole,” she urged, seeming to have
better places to be.
“Vince, was
it?” Cole extended his hand. “Nice to
meet you.”
“You too,”
Vince replied. “We'll keep an eye on
her.” Cole nodded, pleased with Vince's
words.
“Didn't catch
your name,” he said turning to me.
“Boone,” I
replied, thrusting my hand out to meet his.
I wasn't scared of this guy.
Sure, he could have probably kicked my ass all over the street, but he
had no reason to worry about me. I
wasn't interested in his girl.
“Not going to
have to worry about you getting her into any trouble, am I?” He raised up, his broad shoulders casting a
shadow over me. His hand squeezed around
mine in warning.
“Nope,” I
said, matching the pressure of his grip.
“Not going to have to worry about me at all.” I feel myself rising up to gain an inch on
him. “If she's getting into any trouble
she'll be doing it all on her own.”
Which I didn't doubt. As sweet
and naïve as she appeared, I could tell from our brief encounter that she was a
spitfire. Cole didn't need to worry
about me one bit, but he moved toward me nonetheless. This guy wanted to stand
toe-to-toe, I was game. It'd been a
while since I felt an adrenaline rush. I
used to get them all the time—teeing off on the first hole of a major, sinking
a putt to seal a double birdie. This was
a different kind of rush, but I'd take it.
It was good to feel something other than guilt for once.
“Good.” He
finally broke the tension with a chuckle.
“I'll see ya around, Boone.”
“Yep.” Guess
he'd be back to visit.

He always knew he would never be more than nothing. No job, no money, no future. Cole Pritchett had accepted the fact that he would always be the screw up and he was okay with it. Until he met her. About
Elizabeth Lee
Born and raised in the
middle of a Midwestern cornfield (not literally, that would be weird), I’ve
spent my entire life imagining stories. Stories where the right guy always gets
the right girl, first kisses are as magical as they are on the big screen and
anything is completely possible if you believe.
Although this journey
began years ago, it recently took on a whole new life. After years of devouring
hundreds of Romance, YA and New Adult novels, I had an epiphany... I should
write a book. And I did it!
If I’m not reading, writing, enjoying drinks with my amazing group of
girlfriends or chasing around a sarcastically funny kid, I’m probably watching
television shows that were created for teenagers, while my husband teases that
I’m too old to watch them.
