***Book Review*** No Vain Loss (No Ordinary Star, #3) by M.C. Frank

SUMMARY:

A soldier is summoned to the North Pole, days before the year changes, told to fix the great Clock for a celebration. He has no idea what to do.
A girl, hunted for the crime of being born, almost dies out on the ice. She is rescued by the last polar bear left alive.
A library waits for them both, a library built over a span of a hundred years, forgotten in the basement of an ice shack.
The world hasn't known hunger or sickness in hundreds of years. It has also forgotten love and beauty.
This is the One World.
The year is 2524.

Inspired by the short stories of Ray Bradbury, this futuristic young adult novel in three parts is set in a world where Christmas -among other things- is obsolete and a Clock is what keeps the fragile balance of peace.

Written in three parts, this is the breathtaking story of how two unlikely people change the world, and each other, one book at a time.
In No Vain Loss, the world is on the brink of the greatest war humanity has ever known. Lives will be lost. New truths will be revealed.

3/5 Stars

REVIEW:

Tin Soldier & Match Girl have made a place in my heart.

Lets just take a moment to observe how gorgeous the cover is. I confess that it was the cover which drew me to this book and I'm just glad that the story was just as promising as the cover depicts.

I'm a big hoarder of books where the guy ends up being vocal about his feelings for the girl and Felix Hunter said just the things that made my toe curl and made me want to be Aster. <3

Though I'm not a huge fan of Sci-Fi, this trilogy was intriguing from the first book and it just got better with the second and ended the best way it could in No Vain Loss.

I sure look forward to more books by MC Frank!

In life, as in gaming, there’s a way around every obstacle . . .
To pitch her new role-playing game at a European conference, developer Sierra Reid needs to overcome her terror of public speaking. What better practice than competing in a local bar’s diary slam, regaling an audience with old journal entries about her completely humiliating college crush on gorgeous Tristan Spencer?
Until the moderator says, “Next up, Tristan Spencer . . .”
Sierra is mortified, but Tristan is flattered. Caught up in memories of her decade-old obsession as they reconnect, Sierra tries to dismiss her growing qualms about him. But it’s not so easy to ignore her deepening friendship with Alfie, the cute, supportive bar owner. She and Alfie were college classmates too, and little by little, Sierra is starting to wonder if she’s been focusing her moves on the wrong target all along, misreading every player’s motivations.
Maybe the only winning strategy is to start playing by her heart . . .
“Relatable, funny, and charming, this gamingesque book delivers laughs and romance in a warm, satisfying bundle.”
–Elly Blake, New York Times bestselling author of Frostblood

“Sexy and delicious.”
–Kristin Wright, author of Lying Beneath the Oaks
EXCERPT:
“Hmm.” She tapped her finger on her lips. “Everyone’s had a crush on someone, right? It wouldn’t be the most embarrassing revelation in the world. Could you find something like that?”
I thought about it. I really did not want to stand up in front of total strangers—or worse, former classmates—and get laughed at, but Aida was right that an admission of a decade-old crush on a boy in a college class wasn’t the worst thing I might reveal. Besides, everyone had a crush on pretty boy Tristan back in the day. That might work well for this kind of contest.
“Would that be enough to win the prize?” And a guaranteed trip to Germany.
“Why don’t we forget about the prize, okay? I’m more interested in helping you work through your anxiety.”
Right. My forced therapy. “I just don’t see how muscling through one reading will achieve that.”
She bit her lip. “Okay, so here’s the deal. It’s not a one-night contest. It’s an elimination-style competition. Like American Idol.”
“Oh.” That changed things considerably. I just wanted the money, but I couldn’t imagine doing this week after week. Staying home and playing Undertale on the genocide route was sounding better and better.
Aida stood, one hand bracing her back. “Look. It’s right up the street. Let’s just go check it out.”
When she left, I skimmed the journal, hunting for something safe and boring. I didn’t believe reading something embarrassing was going to magically cure me. Nor was I going to win a weeks-long contest. But as Mr. Shepherd, my cross-country coach, used to say, “Running begins, not with the feet, but with the mind.” Maybe just preparing to do the contest, imagining myself succeeding, would be therapeutic on its own.
I took a deep breath and pretended I was actually going to go through with it.

***Spotlight*** What She Concealed By Jannat Bhat

Introducing the first book in the Concealed Series - What She Concealed by Jannat Bhat.
Have a look below!

Title: What She Concealed (Concealed #1)
Author: Jannat Bhat
Age: NA
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: July 10, 2020

Summary :

***This book has been revised as a new adult romance.***

“I missed you.” She said softly, eyes heavy with sleep. “Don’t let go, Julian.”

“Give me a reason, Elly. One reason for holding on.” He said.

She took hold of Julian’s arm and drew him closer. “Us.” She whispered.

Eliana Bennett was about to start her first day as a senior at Imperial High. But the beginning of her day wasn’t good because an arrogant grey-eyed guy from the wrong side of town, provoked her and she couldn’t resist challenging him instead.

Julian Rivera hadn’t expected to meet this feisty dark-haired girl in the middle of his game before he started his year at Imperial High. But when he found her to be a fellow classmate, he just had to prank her.

Julian and Eliana began their acquaintance with screaming matches and mischief which changed after he truly fell in love with her. But Eliana had no plans of pursuing a relationship. She had to work hard and focus on her grades to make her father, Jonathan Bennett, the headmaster of Imperial High, proud. Julian’s appearance in her life complicated things.

After an argument between them topped all others, Julian went AWOL and back to the life he had long left behind. Eliana had a tough time getting to terms with her feelings but once she had, she wouldn’t let Julian go without a fight.

The question remained, will her love bring Julian back or was it too late? The demons he had run away from, had they coveted him as their own?

Excerpt:

“Julian, please. I understand that you’re mad at me and I’m sorry about blowing things out of proportion the other day. But hurting yourself is not the answer.” She said looking at his split lip.

Julian laughed bitterly. “You need to stop. This absurd pretense of caring about me, this needs to stop, Eliana.”

“Say what you want if it makes you feel better, but you’re coming with me,” She said. “Please don’t ruin your life over me. If you don’t come back you’re going to be suspended!” She tried to make him understand the enormity of his decision.

“Life?” He scoffed and shook his head. “I don’t care.” He said. Eliana was scared because she had never seen Julian as lifeless as he seemed now. His spark was missing and she was responsible for it.

“Julian, I’m not worth ruining yourself over. No one is.”

“You? You think I did all this because of you?” He gave her a humorless smile. “Whatever happened between us is in the past. Nothing’s going to change now.”

“Why are you fighting everyone over this?” She asked. “Why won’t you just come back?”

“Because me staying away, it’s the right thing to do.” He sighed.

“Right thing for whom?”

“For everyone.”

“Since when have you done the right thing?”

“Ever since . . . you.” He said quietly lowering his eyes.

“Julian, listen to me.”

“I’m done talking.” He said and turned back to her at the door. “Catch a flight back Eliana and don’t come back. There is nothing for you here.”

I have you here, Eliana thought and followed him out the back door and saw Creesto surrounded by his fans. His eyes fall on her and he leaves the groupies and comes to her with a few guys following his lead. She looked at Julian who was busy getting on his motorbike, avoiding her. Eliana took a step towards him but Creesto intercepted her.

“Hello there.” He drawled with his thumb sliding against his lower lip in a crude way. “What’s your name dearie?” Eliana felt disgusted by the way Creesto and his followers were staring at her.

“My name is none of your business.” She said and tried to leave but they stopped her again.

“It’s no wonder Rivera was distracted. If I had a girl like you, I’d get beaten up all day every day just to have a taste.” Eliana looked for Julian but she couldn’t see him. She stiffened when Creesto touched a strand of her hair and wrapped it around his finger. “She’s such a beauty. If only she’d give us a moment.” The guy nearest to her came closer. “I promise, I won’t disappoint.” Eliana was getting nowhere with these guys and she was running out of time to convince Julian. “Don’t look for him. He’s not the man for you. He’s not right in the head leaving you all alone out here.” Creesto said. “But you have nothing to worry about. You have me now.” He came forward and the rest moved back letting their leader make the first move. Creesto dropped her hair and took her arm trying to pull her forward but when Eliana’s scream cut the air, Julian was the first to come to her rescue. Her grey eyed guy had his hand on Creesto’s arm pulling it away from her with brutal force almost crushing it.

“I warned you in the cage, Perez. Don’t mess with me.” Julian said moving in front of Eliana.

“Back off, Rivera. You don’t need this girl, so leave her to us.” Creesto said, tilting his head at Eliana.

“She’s my girl,” Julian growled dangerously. He didn’t wait for the other man to reply and hit him square in the face, breaking his nose with a sickening crush. The other men gathered around to attack Julian, but he was much faster and quicker than them. Avoiding their punches swiftly and hit them where it hurt. Looking at the scene, Eliana realized that one could only get to Julian if he wanted them to. But if his focus was zeroed in, nobody stood a chance getting a hit on him.

Creesto came forward again with a snarl, nose bleeding and Julian grabbed the back of his head, pulling his hair he smacked Creesto’s head on the hood of the jeep that stood nearby. Creesto fell to the ground with that, moaning as rest of the men backed, not wanting to fight Julian one on one. Julian bent down on his heels so he was closer to Creesto.

“Mine, Perez. If I see you or your men anywhere near her, I will not stop, I will end you.” He threatened the fallen man. “They don’t call me unstoppable for nothing.”

The sky split open and rain started pouring on them in heavy showers. Julian removed his jacket and held it out to Eliana. “It’s not safe around these parts. Go to the airport and catch a flight back immediately.”

“I’ll go if you’ll go,” Eliana said draping the jacket over herself.

“How many times do you need me to repeat myself? I’m not going.” Julian said.

“Then neither am I.”

Julian cursed at her stubbornness and went back to the bike massaging his knuckles, he turned on the engine. He drove up near Eliana and waited quietly, accelerating on the spot. Eliana wasn’t sure what else to do, so she climbed onto it and wrapped her hands around him. He stiffened at her touch and closed his eyes losing himself for a few moments at the feel of her. None too soon he came back to his senses and drove into the rain.

When I envisioned Zara Logan dropping to her knees in front of me, this wasn’t what I had in mind…
I was expecting a lot less glaring and a lot more moaning.
Instead, she’s proposing an enticing deal that I can’t bear to walk away from.
To land one of the city’s biggest clients, she wants us to put our differences aside and play fake fiancés for the next thirty days.
So, I slip the diamond ring onto her finger and agree to play the perfect fiancé. How hard can this be?
A hell of a lot harder than I thought…
She’s infuriatingly stubborn and she thinks I’m a cocky jerk with an enormous ego. (She’s right, but I can definitely back it up…)
As our long days stretch into even later nights, it’s getting harder to remember we’re only playing pretend, which means one thing.
She won’t be faking it for long…

***Book Blitz*** Why Can’t Freshman Summer Be Like Pizza? By Andy V. Roamer (The Pizza Chronicles #2)

Why Can’t Freshman Summer Be Like Pizza?
Andy V. Roamer
(The Pizza Chronicles #2)
Publication date: June 1st 2020
Genres: Contemporary, Young Adult
RV, having successfully completed his freshman year at the demanding Boston Latin School, is hoping for a great summer. He’s now fifteen years old and looking forward to sharing many languid summer days with his friend Bobby, who’s told him he has gay feelings too. But life and family and duties for a son of immigrant parents makes it difficult to steal time away with Bobby.
Bobby, too, has pressures. He spends part of the summer away at football camp, and his father pushes him to work a summer job at a friend’s accounting firm. Bobby takes the job grudgingly, wanting to spend any extra time practicing the necessary skills to make Latin’s varsity football team.
On top of everything, RV’s best friend Carole goes away for the summer, jumping at an opportunity to spend it with her father in Paris. Luckily, there is always Mr. Aniso, RV’s Latin teacher, to talk to whenever RV is lonely. He’s also there for RV when he inadvertently spills one of Bobby’s secrets, and Bobby is so angry RV is afraid he is ready to cut off the friendship.
EXCERPT:
Bobby and I sat there for a while, not saying anything, just enjoying being together, feeling like we were watching the whole world but not letting the world see us.
“So? Was this worth the bike ride and the climb?” Bobby finally asked.
“You bet. I love finding special places. Like the place in the woods not far from my house. It’s a good place to think and dream.”
Bobby nodded. “Yeah. I discovered this spot when I came to the park with my folks. They just wanted to sit and relax on the hill, so I went exploring.”
“Yes, exploring is good. Where would we be in life without exploring!”
I laughed and gave Bobby a nudge. He nudged me back. “Now I’ve shown you a good place to think and dream too.”
I nodded, and we sat quietly for a long time, just happy looking out at Boston and being next to each other. Bobby put his hand on mine and it reminded me again of the first time he had touched me in the spring. The crazy, amazing feeling that went through my whole body. I know it’s stupid to say, but it was like I became alive in a new way. Even though that jolt of excitement lasted only a few seconds, I’ll never forget it.
It was great to experience the feeling again. Bobby’s gentle touch on my hand probably didn’t mean much to him, but to me it meant a lot, especially that things were good between us. It was one of those moments in life when everything seems perfect. Just the way it’s supposed to be. I wanted to stay there forever with Bobby’s hand on mine.
Then I remembered something. “Hey, Bobby!” I exclaimed, turning to him.
“What?”
“It’s the summer solstice!”
Bobby looked puzzled.
“The longest day of the year. When the sun is exactly over the Tropic of Cancer. It happens every year between June 20 and 22. And this year it’s today.”
Bobby suddenly laughed. “Oh, RV. You should go on a game show!”
My cheeks were getting hot. Carole calls it the RV Blush. When I’m really embarrassed about something, my face turns bright-red. And I was really embarrassed by my nerd part coming out in front of Bobby of all people.
Bobby was still laughing. “I believe you. I really do.” He put his arm around me and gave me a little hug. “Being with you, I learn all these crazy things. That’s why I like you.”
“Don’t these long days make you feel good?” I said, more quietly. “Summer stretching out ahead. It makes me feel optimistic. Like I’ll have time to live my life, and not just do homework. Or chores. Or other things I’m forced to do. Summer is for us.”

***Book Blitz*** Her Billionaires By Julia Kent (Her Billionaires, #1)

Her Billionaires
Julia Kent
(Her Billionaires, #1)
Publication date: September 24th 2013
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance
FROM NEW YORK TIMES AND USA TODAY BESTSELLING AUTHOR JULIA KENT
COULD SHE REALLY FIND THE RIGHT GUY ON THE INTERNET?
“Hot, luscious woman who can suck a golf ball through forty feet of garden hose seeks rippling-ab’d firefighter who has a tongue that thrums like a hummingbird and enjoys painting my toenails and eating Ben & Jerry’s out of the carton while watching Orange is the New Black.”
Curvy business analyst Laura Michaels stared at the online dating site’s registration screen and frowned. That’s what she really wanted to write. By the time her best friend, Josie, edited and clicked “Send,” her personals ad was more fantasy than reality.
OR WOULD SHE GET MORE THAN SHE BARGAINED FOR?
When two different guys — Dylan Stanwyck and Mike Pine — replied within two days, she seemed doubly blessed. After a first date with model-turned-firefighter Dylan that ended in bed — and with a huge misunderstanding — Laura came home from her Walk of Shame to an invitation for a hike with ski instructor Mike. The Great Outdoors became the setting for so much more…
Caught between two men — literally — who turned out to be roommates and secret billionaires, Laura makes a startling discovery about her own capacity for passion.
And, maybe, long-term love in an unconventional romance with two men that pushes every boundary.
Including her own.

EXCERPT (Book 1):
“Luscious, curvy financial analyst seeks friendship and more. Financially independent and self-assured, I’m a fit woman who wants a man (or, more than one! YOLO!) for stimulating conversation…er, yeah. Conversation. Message me (or massage me!).”
Something fierce and hot inside him came to life. From that description it sounded like she…seriously? No way.
“Mike! Hey, Mike! Get in here!” If there were a chance— any chance at all, here, then he had to act fast. Someone this amazing was about to get inundated by messages from needy weirdos.
And he needed to be the first.
His roommate wandered in. Where Dylan was all muscle and brawn, Mike Pine was tall and sleek, a marathoner’s body of long, lean tissue. Dylan’s dark, thick, Italian, looks made him popular with women, but Mike was the golden boy, with blonde hair and blue eyes—the long-distance runner with a soft heart, the guy women turned to and poured their hearts out, Mr. Sensitive to Dylan’s Mr. Conquest.
Dylan tapped the screen. “Take a look at her.”
He smiled smugly as Mike’s eyes raced across the screen. They’d been waiting for a long time. Too long. His roommate’s expression told him everything he needed to know. Score! It might finally be time.

***Book Blitz*** Forget Me Not By Lawna Mackie

Forget Me Not
Lawna Mackie
Publication date: June 19th 2020
Genres: Adult, Romance, Suspense
At the age of twelve, Pippin Bartlett, is abducted by her mentally ill father who goes on a killing rampage. Fortunately she is rescued outside the small town of Snow Lake, Manitoba by ex-sniper and CSIS Agent Matt Lalor, who shoots and reportedly kills the man although the body is never recovered.
Fast-forward ten years and we find Pippin writing successful novels in New York under the alias of Avery Woods. Her words help lessen the impact of the terror she lived through. That is until a series of fan letters arrive. And not just from any fan, but one who sounds a lot like her father and is determined to finish the failed job from ten years ago.
Matt Lalor has secrets of his own. A career that ended badly and one he wishes to forget. He lives his life in a remote cabin in Snow Lake where, whenever possible, he avoids people. With two notable exceptions he mostly succeeds. The first is the day he is required to rescue a twelve-year old girl. Never missing a shot he believes whole-heartedly the man is dead. The second is the day twenty-two year old Pippin drives into a snowbank on his property to turn his world upside down. She’s being hunted by a killer for a second time, and Matt refuses to let harm come to her. What he doesn’t expect is for the fearless and sassy beautiful young woman to capture his heart in the process.
EXCERPT:
The scope allowed him to see perfectly through the dark night sky. His target held a knife in his outstretched hand. He had a perfect shot.
“Shit!” He and Monty inched forward.
“Stay away from me!” the girl screamed. “I swear I’ll jump.”
The hideous laugh made his blood curdle and the hairs stand on the back of his neck.
“You’re too scared to jump. You won’t do it,” Baxter jeered.
It was now or never.
“She might not jump, but I have no problem pulling my trigger,” Matt yelled, never taking him out of his sights.
Startled, James Baxter turned in the direction of his voice, then let out a string of vulgar words.”
“Fuck! It doesn’t matter. She’ll be dead anyway. I told that stupid bitch Clarice. If I can’t have her nobody will. Shut the hell up James! I can’t think!” Still holding the knife, he clutched his head.
“Back up slowly Baxter. It doesn’t need to end this way.”
“Fuck you!”
Pippin continued to sob.
“Pippin, my name is Matt. Are you hurt?” he shouted out to her.
She lifted her head towards the direction of his voice. “No. Well, yes, a little.”
“Shut up Pippin,” Chance shouted at her. “Don’t you fucking talk to him.” He moved up the log again and Pippin screamed, clinging to the top of the tree.
Matt heard the crack and groan from the taxed wood. It was never simple.
“Baxter, you’ve got one last chance. Back up now!”
Slowly and quietly he calmed himself and took a few deep breaths. He closed his eyes and visualized his target. Opening his eyes he stared into the scope and the cross hairs aligned to the man’s head. Normally he’d shoot for the chest, but he was lying on his stomach.
“Pippin, close your eyes,” Matt shouted.
Baxter jumped and Matt pulled the trigger. The bullet found its mark.
The tree cracked again because Baxter’s body rolled off the side and hung swinging in the air caught up in a large limb.
“Dammit! Pippin, don’t move. Stay absolutely still.”
He swung the gun over his shoulder and ran for the base of the tree, but it was too late. The large root was unable to take the weight of Baxter’s body swinging in the air. He heard the cracks as it lost its hold to the earth.
Pippin screamed wildly. Monty barked.
Before he could reach the tree it tore from the ground and fell through the air along with Pippin’s scream.
“Fuck!” Matt screamed, watching everything cascade downward and plunge into the water.
If she managed to survive the fall she’d drown for sure.
Monty whined and barked as he stared over the edge. Matt knew Monty was the best chance the girl had. The dog would make it faster down the hill than he could.
“Monty. Find. Retrieve.”
What he hadn’t expected was what the crazy dog did next. Instead of tearing off down the hill, he took off at a run and leapt off the cliff.
“No!” Matt yelled.

EXCERPT:
ROSE
One. Two. Three.
Breathe.
I will the voices to stop. The ones that haunt me day and night and every second they can in between. I hear my daughter’s cry echoed by my son’s laughter and know I need to go out there. I know I need to make sure everything is alright, but damn it if I can’t pull myself up off this floor in the tiny closet me and Michael used to call our own.
I look up and see his fatigues. Tears prick the back of my eyes as a burn quickly rises in my chest.
It’s not possible.
A little more than 6 months later and I still can’t believe he is never coming back. Never coming home to me and our son and will never get the chance to meet his daughter who came just three short weeks after his passing.
It’s quiet in my mind for the first time in hours, but the noises that rage out in our little living room have me finally pushing myself up off the carpet and slowly putting one foot in front of the other. The scene that unfolds when I turn the corner makes me wish I could turn right back around and continue to hide where I finally found peace, if only for a few seconds.
Worthless. You have to hide from your own children? What kind of fucked up mother are you? Michael would be so ashamed.
I shake my head and try to will the voice to stop as I blink back the tears that finally decide to fall and I make my way over to Olivia in her highchair. Hanging over the edge, she is screaming at the top of her lungs while her little brother, Liam, spins in circles in front of her with his favorite truck making all sorts of loud noises.
Wiping my eyes, I pick her up and try and steady my nerves.
Quiet. The voices are quiet. But for how long, I wonder as anxiety kicks in and I walk with my daughter in my arms to sit in Michael’s favorite recliner. The tears fall harder as I clutch my daughter to my chest and swear I can almost smell him, hear him, feel him in the small house we used to call our home.

To succeed, he needs a riddle in Beatrix’s possession.

Author Bio:
Alicia has a weak spot for happy endings and transformative journeys. She spent her teenage years

Out of My League
Sarah Sutton
Publication date: June 16th 2020
Genres: Contemporary, Romance, Young Adult
It’s all fun and games until someone catches feelings.
Sophia Wallace is convinced her life is over when her high school cuts the journalism program. Without the elective, she loses her chance to intern with the biggest newspaper company in the county, and why? All because the baseball team needs more funding.
To make matters worse, her boyfriend publicly dumps her at a party, which is mortifying. But the icing on the cake is when the captain of the baseball team and the most popular guy at Bayview High, Walsh Hunter, decides to be chivalrous. He jumps in, throws his arm around Sophia, and declares his undying love for her. In front of everyone.
Suddenly, Sophia is thrown into a world of fake relationships and undercover journalism, and she realizes she’s way, way out of her league.
Good thing she’s got the team captain to teach her how to play.
But faced with choosing between saving her journalism class or her newfound feelings for Walsh, will she strike out or hit a home run?
EXCERPT:
Staring at his face, I noticed a faint, silvery scar underneath his right eye, as small as my thumbnail. I reached out with my free hand, tracing my fingertip along his skin. A featherlight touch, barely there. “What happened here?”
His gaze never left mine. “Baseball cleat. Fourth grade. One of my teammates threw it at me.”
“Some little league kid threw their shoe at you? Why?”
“I told him that he couldn’t bat very well.” Walsh shrugged. “He couldn’t take the truth.”
I snorted. “You were that kid? The dream crusher?”
“Well, someone had to be.” His small smile was unapologetic. “Ask me who the kid was.”
I looked at him for a moment before tipping my head. “No way. Scott?”
“Who else would be that aggressive as a fourth-grader?”
Dina pulled at my arm as I laughed, shaking my head at the thought of miniature Scott throwing a shoe at small Walsh. I stepped out from the tangle of leashes at our feet, glancing down. “Oh, your poor rich-boy shoes.”
“What?” Walsh looked at his feet. “Oh.”
Brown smeared the side of his expensive-looking shoe, probably coating along the bottom. “With dogs around, you should probably watch where you’re walking.”
Walsh let go of my hand to switch the leash and proceeded to try and smear the offensive substance onto the grass. “Now you tell me.”
“Should we clean the poop off your shoe together? Is that romantic?”
His response was dry. “Ha-ha.”
“What? Shouldn’t we get a photo and caption it, ‘This might’ve been an accident, but falling in love wasn’t’?”
“Watch it, or I’ll wipe it on your ankle.”
I jerked back just in case he tried it, nearly tripping over Dina’s wealth of leash.

Deception and Desire
Aubrey Wynne
Publication date: June 16th 2020
Genres: Adult, Historical Romance
Two rebellious souls… An innocent deception… One scorching catastrophe…
Welcome to book 1 in the MacNaughton Castle Romance by Aubrey Wynne. Read for Free in Kindle Unlimited!
Fenella Franklin is too tall, too intelligent, and has no title. Her talents lie in numbers and a keen business mind, not in the art of flirtation. When she becomes the object of a cruel wager during her come-out in London, she vows to put off the penniless noblemen vying for her sizeable dowry. But her season is cut short after her mother discovers the subterfuge, and Fenella retreats to Scotland.
Lachlan MacNaughton has neither the temperament nor the patience to be the next MacNaughton chief, preferring to knock heads together rather than placate bickering clansmen. He readily accepts a reprieve to help with the family’s textile mill in Glasgow. A sizzling chance encounter in the rain introduces him to the new female bookkeeper. His grandfather may want him back in the Highlands, but his heart has been lost in the Lowlands.
The attraction between Fenella and Lachlan sparks a passion not even two rebellious souls can deny.
But an innocent deception tests their newfound love and threatens the freedom they both crave.
A MacNaughton Castle Romance
Book 1 – Deception and Desire
Book 2 – An Allusive Love
Book 3 – A Bonny Pretender
EXCERPT:
Reaching the street, he squinted through the drizzle in time to see a dark form dashing toward him, head down against the light rain.
Smack! The woman collided with Lachlan. He spread his feet to maintain his balance as the slate-colored gown and pelisse crumpled before him. Without thought, he swept her up before she hit the wet ground.
Her straw bonnet was askew, tiny droplets of rain sparkled in her pale blonde hair, and long lashes spiked like jagged crescents against her smooth cheeks. Her alabaster skin gave her the appearance of a fine Greek sculpture, except for the pink spreading across her cheeks. When her lids fluttered open, clear gray eyes blinked owlishly at him. Mesmerizing was the first word that came to his mind. He was unable to tear his gaze from the exquisite face.
A wet angel, he thought.
“Oh,” was all the angel said, a sheen of moisture covering her skin. A hand went to her neck – a long and graceful neck.
“Aye,” said Lachlan, though it sounded more like a growl to his ears. Her warmth seeped into his upper body, and he squelched the urge to toss her up and resettle her closer to his chest.
She trembled slightly; her full, pink lips slowly turned up in a half-smile. A single drop of moisture clung to the corner of her mouth. It beckoned to him, dared him… Lachlan dipped his head and brushed his lips against her velvet ones, his breath catching at his own audacity. The rain swathed them, their damp clothes sticking to slick skin, diminishing the barrier of her cotton dress. Her chest rose and fell, pushing against his own.
Those liquid silver orbs blinked again as he raised his head and went wide with surprise, accentuating their dark outer ring of black. Then her feet kicked against his tight hold. His gaze traveled down her legs, long shapely limbs molded by her damp skirt, then back up to the bonniest face he’d seen in years. Carefully, Lachlan set her down, gripping her elbows to give her some support. She was slender but tall for a female, the crown of her head just at his eye level. He wouldn’t get a crick in his neck looking down at her. Aye, he’d like to spend more time… exploring that face.
